The two trunks with the same label
I’m on my knees on the dusty backstage floor, staring at two prop trunks with the same painted label. One’s meant for Performer A, one for Performer B, but things have been swapped for weeks. Off to the side, a locked storage cage holds the rest. I want a number for how linked the trunks really are.
The obvious job is brutal. I keep opening trunk B, sorting its props into new piles, and hoping one sorting tells me what’s in trunk A. The catch is the answer changes with the sorting, so in a messy theatre there are too many ways to try.
So I stop rummaging and pull out a different tool, a detailed floor plan that includes hidden corridors you can’t see from the stage. On this map, trunk A and trunk B sit on the edges, and the storage cage stands for everything else. I look for the narrowest passage inside that blocks the route between A’s link to B and A’s link to the cage.
That tight bottleneck becomes my shortcut. It lets me estimate the plain, easy-to-grab connection between A and B: what A seems to share, minus what A is still tied up with the storage cage through that narrow cut. Then the extra, stranger connection is whatever is left after taking that plain part away from the total link.
On a simple map, the answer comes in neat chunks, then suddenly flips when the shortest cut jumps to a different corridor. On a wilder map, like one with deep loops, the link changes in stages as A or B grows. In one hot, lopsided case, the obvious matching props fade fast, yet a subtler shared ordering can hang on for a while.
Then I ask a sharper question. After you account for the strongest pairwise tie, how much of that strange connection is still left? On the map it’s like noticing detours that only exist because trunk A, trunk B, and the storage cage share a three-way layout. Some of the link isn’t a two-trunk story at all.
But what if I don’t have a fancy floor plan? I make a mirror inventory instead, pairing each prop with a reflected twin, and count how tightly the mirrored record ties A and B together, without trying every sorting of trunk B. It tracks the best answers well enough to beat rough shortcuts, even when the neat links have thinned.
