Forklifts whined and the route boards blinked like nervous eyes. I had a crowd of drivers waiting, and each checkpoint was a left-or-right choice. I didn’t need the single best route slip. I needed a mountain of slips that all felt like they came from one rulebook.
The old way was to have clerks predict what kinds of slips should show up most, then compare. That works for small days. With this many drivers and checkpoints, the possible slips multiply too fast, so the clerks can’t even write down what “should” happen.
So the team changed the floor, not the goal. They set the lanes in a big grid and put little doors between neighbors. Open a door for a quick handoff, shut it again, and the rest stays calm. That on-off rhythm let many neighbor handoffs happen across the warehouse without a pileup.
Fast can still be wrong, so they needed a simple score. They’d grab a handful of finished slips and ask, “Do these look like the rulebook would favor them, or like random scribbles?” A perfect match would score high, pure noise would score low, and real life sits between.
When the full board got too huge to predict, they made easier versions for checking. Sometimes they kept a line of doors shut, splitting the floor into smaller halves the clerks could still track, then combined the predictions. They also tried a partly closed setup that stayed barely trackable. The scores lined up where checking was still possible.
On the hardest run, the warehouse pushed everyone through a long chain of checkpoints and spit out an enormous stack of slips in minutes. The clerks weren’t careless. Each extra checkpoint balloons the choices, and every open door ties lanes together, so the bookkeeping turns into a knot.
Near the end of the shift, the mistakes didn’t look like one big mystery. They looked like lots of small, local slips that added up in a steady way. The grid, the quick neighbor doors, and the scoring check held together at a size the clerks couldn’t fully track, and the boards finally felt less like panic and more like control.
