Those scores get turned into listening shares that fit into one fixed budget, so the shares add up neatly. The skipper builds a fresh picture by blending the neighbours’ messages, each one scaled by its share, then updates the next decision from that mix. Takeaway: it learns who to listen to, instead of guessing in advance.
The skipper doesn’t trust just one way of listening. Several “listening passes” run side by side, each picking up different hints, like urgency or similarity. Midway, the passes stay separate to keep the view rich. At the final call, their advice is averaged so one pass can’t boss the rest.
During practice runs, some channels get muted at random, sometimes even after the listening shares are set. It’s like losing a radio link and still having to make a sensible call. That stops the system clinging to one loud neighbour, and helps when only a few boats have solid facts.
On networks like linked documents, this careful dial-turning helped a bit compared with equal-volume listening. On networks of interacting proteins, where the connections were new, it held up much better. The skipper didn’t get more voices that night. The skipper just learned which ones to trust.
