She explained that if they were truly connected, moving one lantern would instantly pull the other, no matter the distance. This invisible link was the secret to the show.
She expanded the group to ten. They tried a "Fragile Ring" formation, but when one dancer dropped their light, the whole pattern died. It was too unstable. So she switched them to a "Resilient Web," where everyone connected to multiple neighbors. Now, even if one person failed, the light pattern survived. The shape of the connection mattered more than the dancers themselves.
Then ten thousand performers flooded the field. The director froze. With ten people, she could check every hand and foot. But with a crowd this huge, checking every individual connection would take a lifetime. The sheer amount of information was a tidal wave. She had no way to see if the group was truly locked together just by looking.
